The payment of social security taxes is not a decision that you can opt into because it is mandatory for all Americans unless the individual meets certain provisions or exemptions that is listed in the law. Therefore, most Americans must participate in this system by paying taxes on their earned income. This means that everyone who works in the U.S. must pay their Social Security taxes on the earnings that they have received from their employers (via social security deductions).
Sole proprietors must also make payments on the profits that they receive, even though they are self-employed. This program is a benefit for the masses and it can be used for a variety of different situations. This means, the benefits can be paid to retirees and disabled taxpayers as long as the individual has earned enough credits to receive the benefits that they have earned. Therefore, if you have earned at least 40 work credits, you should qualify for receiving the Social Security benefits.
