Their 19 Year Old Tax Dependent Doesn’t See the Need to Work

by Easyincome on February 16, 2012

Cheryl and Seth, friends of ours who have 5 kids, told us that their 19 year old tax dependent, Jeremiah, still refuses to do any meaningful type of work. They are getting very frustrated with him and don't know what to do about the situation. Well, it seems that some parents might spoil their children so badly that this is what happens. We've seen similar things with others who have kids.

Moms and dads sometimes start the ball rolling because they lack patience and a desire to teach their kids meaningful chores and other work. When asking a child to help them, one or the other (sometimes both) sees that the child can't do what they'd normally do all that well and "takes over" the task at hand, thinking the child can't do it right anyway so why have her or him do it rather than coach her into doing it correctly. Which takes patience. The child may end up feeling that he or she can't do anything right so why bother? And voila! Laziness and/or lack of wanting to work is born.
