2011 energy tax credits for roofs (metal & asphalt) is 10% of costs up to $500 or a specific amount from $50 to $300. The energy tax credit for roofs must be in an existing home and must be your principal residence. The tax credit for roofs will expire on December 31, 2011.
The whole point of the energy efficient roof is to prevent the heat from going into your home. The more heat that gets into your home, the more energy it takes to cool it down. Certain metal roofs or asphalt roofs reflect the sunlight or have cooling granules on them. Be careful to choose qualifying roofs for the energy tax credit for roofs. Only metal roofs with certain pigment coatings or asphalt roofs with certain cooling granules will be eligible to use for the energy tax credit. You cannot include the installation costs when claiming the tax credit for energy efficiency.
In order to claim your energy tax credit for roofs you will need your receipt, and the manufacturer's certificate statement. Tax form 5695 will have to be attached to tax form 1040 or tax form 1040NR.
